Vietnamese Film "Mekong Whispers" Earns Palme d'Or Nomination at Cannes

Director Nguyen Phuong's debut feature, shot entirely on 35mm film, is generating Oscar buzz ahead of its international release.

"Mekong Whispers" tells the story of three generations of a river delta family as their homeland faces rising sea levels. Filmed over three years with a largely non-professional cast, it is the first Vietnamese film nominated for the Palme d'Or in 28 years. Festival jury president called it "a visual poem about memory and loss."
